Huazangsi is Chinese Pinyin, in which “Hua Zang” is the name, “Si” means “monastery”, and its name in Tibetan is “Rabgye Gompa” with meaning of Propagation Of Buddhism . It has been renamed three times since the beginning of construction, and the roof of the palace has also been changed several times.

Brief

It was first built in the early Ming Dynasty. It is said that a lama from outside the area built a small monastery here at the request of the local people and tribal leaders.

Soon afterwards, the local clan leader raised funds to expand it into a monastery of a certain scale, called Hua Zang Temple.

Hua Zang Si was originally under the jurisdiction of Shimen monastery (Paling Tosam Dargeyling), and later separated from Shimen monastery. During the Kangxi period of Qing Dynasty, it became a famous Gelug pa monastery, and being listed as one of the Huguo monasteries (Huguo means protect state). In addition to providing food and clothing for the monks in the monastery, the imperial government also allocates silver to support them every year.

In the early of 1950s, there were 46 monks, 1 living Buddha (Hua Zang Living Buddha, died before 1958), 1 assembly hall and 1 Living Buddha House, and dozens of monks’ houses. After 1958, the monastery was partially demolished. The original jade seals, documents, court clothes, plaques, golden and jade Buddha statues, sutra, and artifacts awarded by the government of Ming and Qing dynasty were all lost or destroyed.

It now reopened in 1981, there are currently about 10 monks and 3 small scripture halls.
