Larung Gar Buddhist Academy is also called as “Larung Gar Five Sciences Buddhist Academy”. This name was given by the 10th Panchen Lama in May of 1987. In the meantime, Mr. Puchu Zhao, the Chairman of the Buddhist Association of China, wrote the name of the institute in Chinese.
Despite its remote location, it grew quickly to be the largest and most influential centers for the study of Tibetan Buddhism in the east Tibet of Kham and Amdo.

Chengdu to Kangding
Today, we begin our journey, we’ll drive 350 kilometers on a paved road into hill country and cross through Mt. Erlang tunnel, then after we will stop by to visit Luding Iron Bridge. We will arrive at the gateway town of the Eastern Tibet of Kham – Kangding, which is cradled along the raging Dzetuo River. The river’s continual rumble can be heard in its alleyways where nomads from the West to sell Tibetan herbal medicine, Khampa knives, traditional Tibetan garments, and yak butter tea. For centuries the town has held the status of “Gateway to Tibet,”
Kangding to Luhuo
After having breakfast, we will depart to Tagong, where we are going to visit the Lhagang monastery. According to a legend, when Princess Wengcheng (Tang dynasty) traveled to Tibet, she stayed overnight there, and the Jowo Shakyamuni image which she brought as her dowry to Lhasa requesting to be left in that idyllic setting. Subsequently, King Songtsen Gampo constructed 108 temples in the direction of China mainland, after visiting to Lhagang monastery heading to the holy mountain of Yarla Jartso and, visit the great Mani pile. Then after, we will drive to Luhuo, a small Tibetan town that connects Larung Gar in its up-north.

Luhuo to Larung Gar
The drive is about 150km, the first 70km is a plaseant drive on a well-built road, the rest of the 80 km shall be on the bumpy road, which takes more than 3 hours to accomplish. After arrive in Larung Gar, check ini the dometery style guesthouse.

Larung Gar to Barkham
Today, our journey to Larung Gar shall eb on the track to return. The drive to Barkham takes about 7 – 8 hours, we will check in and rest when we arrive in Barkham
Barkham to Chengdu
In the morning we’ll be on our way to Chengdu, en route we will explore the Tibetan village of Zuo-ke-ji, to study how the Tibetan-Loard ruled the people in ancient time. Enojy the ride back to Chengdu, we will drive you to your hotel in Chengdu
