Description
2025 Shaman Festival will be held in the period from July 10th-19th. It is traditional ethnic folk entertainment activities in Tongren County. It has lasted for about 400-500 years and full of magic and joy.
During the festival, villagers are put up their best cloth. They gather together at the monastery, singing and dancing. Local people expect to worship the Mountain God to looking forward to a harvest, peaceful and prosperity of life and well-being.
Of all the activities of the festival, the most amazing practices of the ritual are the Kou-Qian, Bei-Qian and Kai-shan
Kou Qian (Mouth Piercing) — means to pierce steel needles through the mouth
Bei Qian (Back Piercing) — means to pierce steel needles through the back
Kai Shan (Cut forehead with knife) — the mage who cut the top of his forehead with a knife,and spread the blood in all directions,which is a quaint and peculiar way of offering heaven,
The town that this festival is held is in Tongren County which is about 2.5 hours’ drive south of Xining

D1 Arrive in Xining

D2 Xining to Repkong (Tongren)
In the morning, we will depart for Repkong, which is the “old“ name of this county, currently it is called Tongren. The road to this county is well paved, it takes about 2.5 hours to complete the drive. En route we will visit to Wutun village, and Wutun monastery.

D3 Repkong (Tongren) – attending the festival
Today we will visit to Longwu monastery — the principal monastery of Tongren. It was originally constructed in 1301 by the Sakyapa master Sangda Rinchen and later re-constituted as a Gelug Pa monastery by Shar Kalden Gyatso in the 16th century. It currently houses 9 temples and 400 monks. The festival will be also held in this monastery, we will follow and witness the whole process

D4 Repkong (Tongren) – attending the festival
Today we will drive to Wutu village to witness the program; in the afternoon we will get to Sakkyi village to witness programs in this village

D5 Repkong (Tongren) return to Xining
Today, we will depart early from Tongren county, we shall go straight to Kumbum Monastery, which also known as “Taer monstery”; It is one of the 6 great gelug pa monastery; then after we will drive back to Xining to explore the larges mosque of Dongguan Mosque
