Overview
The Shoton Festival, also known as the Yogurt Festival, is one of the grandest and most anticipated annual cultural events in Tibet. In 2025, this sacred festival will take place in August, with the main celebration centered around the dramatic Thangka Unfolding Ceremonies at Drepung Monastery and Sera Monastery in Lhasa.
Historically, monks would complete their summer retreat and descend from the mountains to receive offerings of yogurt from laypeople—marking the origins of the Shoton Festival. By the 17th century, the celebration evolved into a cultural extravaganza that included Tibetan opera performances, Buddhist rituals, and community festivities at Norbulingka Palace.
During this journey, travelers will witness not only the majestic unveiling of a giant Buddha Thangka but also explore Lhasa’s sacred sites, including Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Yamdrok Lake, and several influential monasteries.
