Hui Yuan Temple is also called Gatar Shangbaling monastery. It is about 10 kilometers northeast from Bamei town, and 80 kilometers northwest from Danba county.
It was built in 1728, in the 7th Year of Yong Zheng Emprior of Qing Dynasty. This large monastery has more than 1,000 house. After the completion of the temple, Emperor Yongzheng named this temple “Hui Yuan Temple”. And even sent 1,800 soldiers stationed in the monastery. Then after, Emperor Yongzheng sent people to welcome 7th Dalai Lama to live this monastery, whom spent 7 years in this monastery from 1728-1735
There are two major pujias being held in this monastery annually,
- “Summon Pujia” in the 1st month of Tibetan Calendar
- “Ya Que Pujia” in the 6th month of Tibetan Calendar
The mountains that surround Hui Yuan Temple looks like the shape of eight petal lotus. So this small piece of land is also called “Lotus treasure land”. Hui Yuan Temple is located in the center of this “Lotus treasure land”
Huiyuan temple covers an area of more than 500 MU. There is one road that leads to this monastery straight. The two sides of the monastery gate is red wal, and 108 white chorten are embedded in the red walls.
