Bome, which means “ancestor” in Tibetan, is located in the southeast of Tibet on the north bank of Palong Tsangbo River, also known as “Pome County

Bome County is under jurisdiction of Nyingchi City and covers an area of 14,972 square kilometers.

Brief

It is composed of three former Zongs of Qu Zong, Yigong Zong, and Qing Do Zong. The county seat is Zhamu town with altitude of 2,700 meters, and 636 kilometers away from Lhasa, 230 kilometers to Nyingchi City, 217 kilometers from Baxoi County of Chamdo City

Bome County is one of the grain counties in Tibet. It has the highest tea planting field in China and it is also one of the important producing areas for the export of Matsutake and Morel. There are also many glaciers in its territory, which are well developed and very spectacular.

With a typical subtropical monsoon climate and an elevation of 2,720 meters, Bome valley is also known as “Peach Valley“. Each March, tourists from local and other areas across china to Pome Peach Valley enjoying the great nature view of the blooming peach flowers, the whole valley and mountains are covered by bloom peach and even make the valley and mountains in pink. And so, a new festival of “Peach-Flower Festival” has been reorganized in Pome county ever since 2003.

Armor Mountain, formerly known as Ali Cuori. From April to May or September to October each year, it shows the pattern on the armor worn by ancient soldiers after snow melted, so it was called “Armor Mountain” by the locals.

Midui Glacier, 103 kilometers away from the county seat of Bome County, 8 kilometers away from National Highway N318, and the nearest village is only 2 kilometers away. It is the most important glacier in Tibet. The main glacier peak is 6,800 meters above sea level, and the snow line is only 4,600 meters above sea level. There is a mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forest at the bottom of the glacier. Although Midui Glacier is located at 29°N latitude, however, the temperature at the end of the glacier is lower than that of the Bogduo Mountain at about 44°N latitude. This is a relatively special phenomenon in modern glaciers

Geography and climate


The topography of Bome County is high in north and low in south. Parlong Zangbo Valley and Yigong Zangbo Valley are both in the middle of the county with dozens of tributaries and a drainage area of 4550 square kilometers.

Mt. Nyan-qen-tang-lha stands in its north, west, and northeast. The branch of Mt. Bo-shu-la-ling stands in its east, and Himalaya range stands in its south.

The average altitude of Bome County is about 3600 meter, the highest elevation in Bome County is 6648 meters and the lowest is 1995 meters.

Bome County is affected by Indian Ocean’s southwestern maritime monsoon.

The warm and humid Indian Ocean current flows along the Brahmaputra River, enters Parlong Tsangpo River and Yigong Tsangpo River, and reaches the southern foot of Nyainqentanglha Mountains, which forms a huge difference in weather.

Accordingly, the altitude below 2700 meters belongs to subtropical climate zone, the area in between 2700-4200 meters belongs to warm and semi-humid plateau climate, and the area above 4200 meters belongs to plateau cold, wet, cold and humid zone,

Annual sunshine time is 1563 hours, annual average temperature is 8.5 degrees, annual frost-free period is 176 days, and average annual precipitation is 977 mm.

Population and ethnicity


As of 2000, the total population of Bome County was 26,748, among which Tibetan population accounted for 96% of total population. The remaining ethnic groups included more than 10 ethnic minorities including Han, Miao, Mongolia, Bai, and Naxi.

Brief History


Most of Bome area were semi-independent since Tubo kingdom

In Qing Dynasty(AD 1616 – AD 1912), the area of Bome was actually ruled by Bome King

In the 2ndyear of Emperor Xuantong of Qing Dynasty (AD 1910), Bome King was annihilated by the last minister in Tibet of Qing Dynasty

In 1928, Bome area was completely under jurisdiction of Tibet Gaxag regime.

In 1960, Qu Zong, Yigong Zong, and Qing Do Zong were merged to form Bome County.

In 1964, it was under jurisdiction of Chamdo prefecture.

In 1986, it was under jurisdiction of Nyingchi prefecture

In 2015, Nyingchi prefecture was abolished and Nyingchi City was established, since then, Bome County has been under jurisdiction of Nyingchi City.
