The Tibet Travel Permit is a Tibet travel document other than a Chinese visa. It is issued by the Tibet Tourism Administration, and this document is needed when foreigners travel to Tibet. It can only be applied after having China Visa OR to be applied together with China Visa
Types of Tibet Travel Permit
Travel Permit
issued by Tibet Tourism Board;
it is the permit that for traveling through Tibet
Culture Permit
issued by Tibet Culture Bureau;
it is required when visiting high-protection sites
Alien’s Permit
issued by Tibet Public Security Bureau;
it is required for visiting border areas
Army Permit
issued by local Military district;
it is required for visiting the permitted areas
When traveling to Tibet, not all of the above 4 types of approvals are required to be processed, for example:
To travel in Lhasa only, The required travel documents are just China Visa and Tibet Travel Permit;
If to travel to other regions of Tibet, Say – Nyingzhi, it is required to have China Visa, Travel Permit, Alien’s Travel permit and Army permit;

How to obtain the Permit and Visa
The city that you depart for Lhasa determines the way of obtaining the Permit and Visa
In General, there are two ways to get onto Tibetan plateau
Via Nepal
Via other cities in China.
Among these cities, Chengdu is the most convenient city for flights to Tibet, Kham and Amdo
When enter Tibet from Nepal
You will need to prepare just one document
- A clear color scan of your passport with valid for 6 months minimum
Once you have this documents ready, please forward to us, we will apply the travel permit and China Visa both in Lhasa, Tibet
And you will need to have one Tour operator in Kathmandu OR we can provide our local Kathmandu partner which will be responsible for getting the files from China Embassy in Kathmandu
Attention : All visitors do Not need to have a China visa in advance when entering Tibet from Nepal;
When enter Tibet from China mainland
You will need to have China Visa first, Please visit this page China Visa for how to obtain China Visa; once you have your China visa ready, please forward two documents,
- A clear color scan of your China travel visa
- A clear color scan of your passport with valid for 6 months minimum
We will apply and obtain the needed Tibet travel documents before your arrival;
