Overview

The Tibetan Tribe Tour begins in Chengdu—the capital of Sichuan Province, offering direct international flights to Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia. These convenient air links make access to the Tibetan Plateau easier than ever before.

This immersive journey leads travelers from the bustling gateway town of Kangding onto the vast Tibetan Plateau, where you’ll explore the heart of Kham—home to the “Kangba” Tibetans. The tour combines sacred religious heritage and breathtaking natural wonders. Highlights include the revered Huiyuan Monastery, where the 7th Dalai Lama spent seven years in meditation; encounters with the beloved giant panda; the breathtaking Danba Valley; and the mysterious ancient stone towers nestled in remote mountain villages. The landscapes on this route change dramatically—from snow-capped peaks and glaciers to grasslands and deep river valleys, revealing the diverse beauty of Tibetan culture and geography.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Chengdu

Upon your arrival in Chengdu by flight, you will be welcomed and taken for a cultural experience at a traditional Chinese teahouse in People’s Park. This setting offers a unique window into the daily life of locals, as tea culture is an integral part of Sichuan’s relaxed lifestyle.

Day 2: Chengdu – Kangding – Xinduqiao (Approx. 8–9 hours drive)

We depart early for our journey into the Tibetan region. Our first major stop is Kangding (altitude 2,650 m), a vibrant Tibetan town nestled in a deep valley. Stroll through the town and, with help from your guide, engage with locals. We then ascend Mt. Dzeto Pass (4,323 m), marking our official entry into the Tibetan Plateau, before descending to Xinduqiao (3,300 m)—a photogenic town known for its golden meadows, scattered Tibetan houses, and stunning light.

Day 3: Xinduqiao – Lhagang – Danba

We begin the day with a visit to Lhagang Monastery and the surrounding pastures. Then, heading west via Bamei, we visit the serene Gatar Shangbalin Monastery—where the 7th Dalai Lama once meditated. Not far from here is the birthplace of the 11th Panchen Lama, visible from the main road. After crossing the dramatic Yarla Yartso mountain range, we descend into the Donggu River Valley, a deep gorge that leads to Danba—renowned as the “Kingdom of Ancient Blockhouses.”

This area is home to unique stone towers, some over 60 meters tall, constructed centuries ago for defense and communication. These towers, scattered across green valleys and Tibetan villages, offer a surreal and magical panorama.

Day 4: Danba – Exploration of Tibetan Villages

Spend today exploring Danba in depth. Visit Jiaju or Suopo Tibetan villages, known for their traditional architecture, cultural richness, and watchtowers. Engage with local Tibetan families, learn about their lifestyle, and enjoy views over the Dadu River valley.

Day 5: Danba – Mt. Siguniang (Four Sisters Mountain)

Departing early, we journey toward the spectacular Siguniangshan (Four Sisters Mountain). Upon arrival, we collect our entrance and eco-bus tickets and begin a scenic tour of the Shuangqiao Valley. This area is famed for alpine scenery, snowy peaks, dense forests, and wild rivers—a true paradise for photographers and nature lovers.

Day 6: Mt. Siguniang – Chengdu

We begin our return to Chengdu, driving through the picturesque valleys. On the way, we pass by the ancient Wori watchtower and cross over Mt. Balang, one of the region’s highest vehicle-accessible mountain passes. A final photo stop at Maobiliang offers panoramic views of Mt. Siguniang.

Is altitude sickness a concern on this trip?

This tour reaches elevations over 4,000 meters, particularly at Dzeto Pass and Mt. Balang. While overnight stays are at lower altitudes, some travelers may experience mild symptoms. We recommend staying hydrated, resting well, and notifying your guide if you feel unwell.
