Sershul County

Sershul County is about 25,191 square kilometers large. It is the largest county of Sichuan province. The population of the whole county is more than 86,8000 till the end of 2011. Among of which more than 70% of population is Tibetan; The others are Yi people, Quang people, Han people, Miao people, Hui people, Tu people, Mongolian and Naxi people…etc; It situated in the northwest of Kham neighboring with Amdo and Tibet. The average altitude is 4,250 meters above sea level. The average temperature is -7 degrees, the coldest temperature is -45 degrees. This unique high-plateau weather has built unique Sershul local culture

“Dza-chu-ka” is another name of Sershul, it means the Source of Yalong River; The Sun and Fire is the totem of the local Tibetan nomads, hence “The Sun Tribe” becomes the nickname of Sershul’s Tibetan. Sershul nomadic pasture extend through the upper rivers of the Yalong river to the border of Sichuan and Qinghai.

The capital town of Sershul county is called Jumang. It is 140 km from Yushu Tibetan Prefecture capital of Jeykundo, and 222 kilometer from Manigango – the wild west town. Its altitude is 4200 meter above sea level, even higher than the so called “The world Highest Town” Litang (4,050 m).

There are total 43 monasteries including almost all 5 sects of Tibetan Buddhism. including some important monasteries are: Trugu Gonpa of Geluk pa monastery, and Karma Kagyu monastery of Tsatsha Gonpa, Tshul monastery of Nyingmapa,

How to Get to Sershul

This county is neighbored with Yushu county of Amdo,. Approximately 1,070 kilometers from Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province; and 700 kilometers west from Kangding the capital town of Garze (Kanze) Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province. The closest airport to here is Yushu Batang Airport (3,950 meter), which is about 170 km westward, a 3.5 hours drive’ is needed.
